REVEALED: The Secret to an Organized Storage Shed

A storage shed is typically either one of two things— a well-utilized space that provides functional storage or a glorified junk drawer where tools and other garden supplies go to die. They’re rarely somewhere in the middle.

In my experience, homeowners simply don’t have the time or energy to tackle storage shed organization by the time they’ve addressed more frequently used spaces like their pantry, kids rooms, or primary closets.

It makes sense! In Alberta, sheds hold seasonal items that don’t get used for nearly six months out of the year. If anything is going to be put on the back burner, it’s understandable it would be an outdoor space that simply serves as a dumping ground for lawn mowers, shovels, and other items that only get used periodically.

The problem?

When it is time to use these items, you feel the consequences of your neglect.

Maybe you can’t find that one gardening tool you know you bought last year. Or maybe the paint you need for touching up your deck is buried beneath a mountain of building supplies.

Suddenly, you’re standing there thinking, “I wish I had an organized storage shed”.

So why not do yourself a favor, organize now, and save yourself from a headache in the future?

Today I’m going to be sharing simple strategies and solutions you can use to maintain a neat and tidy storage shed. Keep scrolling!

5 Genius Organization Tips for Storage Sheds

1. Install a PegBoard Wall

Pegboard is a game-changing organization solution that works for a variety of different spaces, including storage sheds! Small barbs are inserted into the pegboard holes, which can then be used to hang power tools, screwdrivers, hammers, and more.

The primary benefit of pegboard is that it utilizes vertical wall space, freeing up other areas like workbenches and tool boxes. Plus, it enhances visibility to keeping essential tools and equipment within eyesight.

Installing a pegboard wall is pretty simple and can usually be done in just a matter of minutes! Here’s a helpful video you can follow.

2. Purchase Clear Plastic Tubs

No list of shed organization tips is complete without mentioning clear plastic tubs. Not only are they weather resistant and stackable, but they allow you to see their contents, making it easier and more convenient to identify items you need.

For added convenience, I recommend choosing transparent drawer-style bins, since they do not need to be disassembled in order to access their contents.

There really isn’t a limit to what can be stored inside these bins. Gardening tools, cords, bags of soil, paintbrushes, or hobby and craft supplies are just a few ideas!

3. Invest in a Portable Garden Cart

A portable cart is an excellent idea for avid gardeners, hobbyists, or handymen who regularly use specific tools or supplies. These frequently-used items can be kept in one place and conveniently maneuvered around your storage shed (or even outside).

This 3-tier cart is one of my personal faves. I love that it collapses for easy stowing, and that it’s made from metal for added durability.

Trust me, once you’re enjoying the mobility this cart provides, you’ll wonder why you ever stored your supplies any other way!

4. Utilize Exterior Wall Space

Large items like wheelbarrows, hoses, and weed wackers can take up a ton of valuable yard or shed space. They’re often left on shed floors or outside where they’re exposed to the elements. There has to be a better way, right?

There is! Installing heavy duty wall-mounted hooks to the exterior of your storage shed is the perfect way to keep large tools and equipment out of your way and in one designated area.

Just be sure whichever items you decide to hang can withstand being out in the weather. If not, you can always cover your equipment with a tarp or invest in a plastic awning to shield it from rain and snow.

5. Make Use of Muffin Tins (Yes, Muffin Tins!)

Believe it or not, one of the secrets to an organized storage shed can be found in your kitchen. Muffin tins are incredibly useful for storing screws, bolts, hinges, nails, and more. They keep all your metal hardware sorted and visible, making it easy to grab what you need when you’re in the middle of a project.

I also recommend placing your muffin tins on a tiered shelf organizer to further maximize the functionality of your space. All of your odds and ends will have a designated place. No more scouring your storage shed looking for a particular type of nail or screw!

Also, don’t be afraid to let your imagination run wild here. Fishing tackle, woodworking supplies, remote control car parts, and an endless assortment of other items can be stored this way too!
